The President
The President practices according to the vows and spirit of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva. His Buddhist name is Qingjing (meaning purity and tranquility), and he is also known by his alias, Wuming (commonly translated as “ignorance”, wuming is a Buddhist term referring to the lack of understanding about the meaning and purpose of life).
When he was only a teenager in the 1970s, the President was keen to explore issues of life and death. After working for a number of years, he felt deeply sorry about how all kinds of sufferings, conflicts, and difficulties in life arise due to people’s ignorance. Because of his deep awareness of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva’s mercifulness and wisdom, he soon abandoned all worldly pursuits and devoted himself to mindfulness and Buddhist practice in the mountains. After years of solitary practice, he gained deep revelations, and decided to set up a temple to propagate Buddhist teachings to enlighten all sentient beings. He practiced the benevolent acts and compassion of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva. By delivering people from their sufferings, he imparts wisdom to them and opens their mind to Buddhist awareness so that they can understand the root of pain and suffering. In the eyes of his followers, the President is no different from their parents. Out of gratitude and respect, all the followers call him the Master or Sifu (meaning “the Master” in Cantonese).
Sifu has a strong karmic link with Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva. Ever since he made the vow to save all sentient beings, he has entered the realm of “no further learning”. The Master has a deep insight into Buddhist wisdom, and he will show all skills of convenience when he teaches his disciples. All the time, he will put the benefits of all beings as his first priority.
Following the deeds and applying the wisdom of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, Sifu has helped numerous people throughout the past three decades. A lot of people suffering from rare or incurable diseases were healed by Sifu. Those with mental illness or facing problems at work and in the family have benefited from Sifu’s help. Sifu’s teachings also enabled them to gain a new awareness of life and inner peace.
Sifu will help anyone who seeks his help in the same way as Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, who answers every call from anyone in need to fulfill the vow of granting “fearlessness” (to be fearless when facing difficulties and dangers). To all his students, Sifu is the life-saving master who deserves their greatest respect and gratitude. More importantly, Sifu’s greatest concern is not our material wellbeing or earthly life, but our “truth body” that will eventually lead us to Buddhahood as we continue to practice. Therefore, accumulating the resources for dharma practice is crucially important to Buddhists.
All beings have passed through countless cycles of birth and death, and have been dwelling in the endless return of the wheel of life. The only way to transcend the bounds of reincarnation is by attaining Buddhist wisdom and a true understanding of the nature of the mind and the meaning of being at ease. The teachings of Sifu enable his students to apply true wisdom in their practice, and to enter a state of true happiness away from worldly worries. This is how we can be liberated from samsara (the six realms of existence).
“Rather be a single blade of grass in a desert than a tree in a forest.” Sifu’s vow is to enlighten all those who need his help regardless of their social and cultural background. He also wishes to spread the Dharma and the great compassion of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva to places where people do not usually have the opportunity to learn the wisdom of Buddha, and where Buddhism can hardly take root. To those who are indulging in worldly pursuits and retreating from their Buddhist practice, the Master will provide useful guidance to purify their mind and enlighten them with true wisdom, and let them return to the path of practice to attain Buddhahood.
